desertcart.com: Alpine Soy Flex Icing Shortening, 50 Pound - 1 each. Review: Perfect high ratio shortening for icing. - I was ordering the high ratio shortening from kitchen crafts at nearly 9.00 a pound. I decided to give this a go. It was worth the risk to me. When I recieved it I was a little shocked at how much 50lbs of shortening really is. It comes in a huge block, so it's best to have large food safe containers ready to divide it into. I was worried that it wouldn't be true high ratio shortening. After checking the ingredient list on both the alpine soy and kitchen crafts I noticed the ingredients are exactly the same. I'm convinced that they are one in the same. As mentioned in annother review you do get bubbles once the icing sits for a few hours. But that happens with every icing ive ever made. My solution is to make it the day before then when I need it, mix it for a few minutes with a paddle attachment. It comes out beautifully smooth. My IMBC is absolute magic when I use half butter and half of this. At less than 2.00 a lb it's a steal. It stays good for a long time as long as it's kept in a dry cool place and you are maticulate about not contaminating it. Keep some in a container for regular use. The rest should be stored separately and pulled out to refill your container. I had a large container that I did this with and it lasted a year and a half before I ran out. You can also freeze it if it gets close to that time and you haven't used it all. I absolutely will be buying more when I run out. I'll include pictures of kitchen crafts and alpines ingredients. Dont be fooled and spend 9.00 a pound on the exact same thing. Review: A perfect Shortening - This was a good product to work with but the taste was a little too strong. I use it for a decorating icing and it was comparable with the brand that I uses to use and cannot find anymore. It is a firm shortening that holds it shape for cake decorations and I found that after frosting a cake it did not crack and disrupt your designs as some thinner shortenings seem to have a tendency to do. I will be working with stronger flavors to improve the taste.

Tasteless and smooth
Neutral flavor, I add just a bit to my buttercream to give it just a little more stability. Very useful for making a very stiff decorator frosting for flowers.

Great shortening for cake icing
I am so glad I found this on Amazon. It is a bit higher priced than other shortenings, but it is the best for buttercream icing & desserts. No aftertaste!

Just good
If you are a seasoned baker and have experience with high ratio shortening, I don’t believe you would love this one. I can absolutely taste a residue, and the texture is slightly greasy and most definitely overpowering. I have always bought the 3lb tub of the shortening I love, but it was pricey as it was and now it has gone up even more. That’s what prompted this purchase. Needless to say, I now have 50lbs of this stuff so I will use it, and no one but myself seems to notice what I do. Having said that, I will switch back to the overpriced 3lb tub.
