Q: Does this come with thermal compound?

Yes, a "syringe" of Noctua's thermal compound is included.

Q: Will this work with any am3+ socket? i see it says backplate required what does that mean? and will this fit in most towers?

The Am4-5 mounting plates that come with it do not fit an am3 motherboard. In this case: msi 970 gaming.

Disregard By Stanley W. Reynolds on February 13, 2020 He clearly is mistaken or simply doesn't know what he is saying about the D15 vs the D9L. I own both of these coolers and the D15 is a very tall cooler that accepts 140mm fans. The D9L is like the baby brother version of the D15. About half the size and half the performance. My D15 with 3 fans easily handles the 5900x while the D9L on my 5800x requires a tweak to the max power settings to limit it from hitting 90c during heavy workloads. Both install easily but there is a massive difference in size. The D9L can basically fit almost any case and build out there. The D15 will need to have a wider then normal case to accommodate it.

Q: Do you have to remove the motherboard to install this on an LGA 1150?

Most likely you will need access to the backside/bottom of the motherboard to mount the backside bracket. My chassis has an access panel so that I did not have to remove the motherboard. Check to see if you can remove the panel the faces the backside of motherboard.
