Excellent design
The pliers is very clever. I think that Victorinox should create a scissors based on this mechanism. I like the lock button for the blade, although initially I thought one had to push the locking bar back with a finger nail which was very difficult! The knife is quite large and feels very sturdy. I collect these knives, and this is one of the best designed ones.

Great knife!
Very nice knife. The pliers alone are worth it! The lock blade and release are very easy to do and undo.

Big, nice selection of tools.
I would not use the marlin spike on steal cable but very useful with rope and paracord. Swam in the ocean with it in March (rinsed with fresh water after of course) and as of October - no corrosion visible. The wire cutter on the pliers might be very handy if you were caught by fishing line while diving or snorkeling. The case is secure and well made. But, we expect a good tool from Victorinox.

Excellent tool for rope work and making nets
Likes:1. Marlin spike - I've been using it a lot when I make cargo nets.2. Shackle remover - Haven't used it on a shackle, but it is good for slipping onto and turning small nuts and bolts.3. Awl - I use it when I stitch together thick material like canvas.4. Bit adapter in handle. Good with long drivers and sockets.5. Cap and can openers are usable.6. Spring-loaded pliers - very well done using spring steel and a cam.7. Blade length8. Color - Very easy to see when sitting next to my other knives and multi toolsDislikes:1. Awl is too short for practical use and very tight. I need to use the screwdriver bit to open it. Length could be added if they moved the pivot point more toward the middle of the tool's back.2. Combo blade: I prefer a plain blade. If kept sharp a serrated blade would not be needed for cutting cordage. However, some people do prefer serrated and combo blades.

Not made for Left-handed opening
Unfortunate, but not surprising, this knife is not designed for left-handers. The larger finger well for one-handed opening on all the ranger series doesn't work for LHs, but it's specially true for this one as it's twice the thickness as the standard model. As long as this isn't a must for you, it's a fine knife.

The quality is excellent, the Marlin Spike with measurements is an excellent ...
If I could, I would give this 4 1/2 stars. The quality is excellent, the Marlin Spike with measurements is an excellent tool. Although it is a large knife, it is easy for me to handle and the RangerGrip lives up to its name. With that said, this is bulky to use on a wavy day on the water. I always have my basic West Marine knife (simple, just the blade and marlin spike). However, on calmer days, I love using this knife. It is sharp out of the box and I carry this with me off the boat as well. Since I take this hiking, camping and kayaking with me as well as an EDC, I found it worth the price I paid.

not the best of SAK line
Too big. Heavy. Certainly not EDC knife. Pliers don't work smoothly. Seems kind of overpriced but includes very good, durable pouch, two high quality screwdrivers and hexagonal slot for them all of this and other tools you can use with it expand the possibilities of this knife considerably. be sure you really need this knife before buying. It is specialized tool for maritime use.
